Greenland 2023
Eleven days including paddling, hiking and camping in southeast Greenland, just below the Arctic Circle.
About
The Greenland expedition was an eleven day expedition including paddling, hiking, and camping in southeast Greenland, just below the Arctic Circle. The team of nine, comprised of six Georgia Tech students, a mentor, and two local guides, traveled primarily by kayak and camped at multiple locations along the route. They also hiked to explore areas near campsites and visited local villages and historical sites.
The total paddling distance varied based on conditions but likely averaged 15 miles per day at a 3 mph pace with fully loaded kayaks. Average temperatures were 0°C to 10°C (32°F to 50°F). The expedition aimed to provide leadership opportunities in a global context, foster collaboration through planning and training, and build character through preparation for the harsh outdoor environment.
Team
We selected individuals who possess the necessary physical fitness, commitment to the outdoors, and ability to handle the potentially challenging weather and environmental conditions possibly encountered on the expedition. Training and preparedness were essential.
