An opportunity to paddle the water trails in the Okefenokee swamp and the nearby Suwannee River. The trip includes amazing scenery and lots of wildlife, including alligators, deer, raccoons, snakes, turtles, Great Blue herons, Little Blue Herons, Egrets, Ibis, Osprey and wild turkeys. Paddling mileage depends on the trails selected, group interests and water levels in the swamp. Options include the Red Trail (12 - 16 miles), the Narrows (8 miles), Billy's Island (5 miles) and the Suwannee River (17 miles with current assist). Past total trip mileage has varied from 35 to 40 miles.
Trip Details
- When: Offered during Spring semester break, beginning about 8:00 am on a Wednesday and ending about 7:00 pm on a Saturday.
- Prerequisites: FoK I and FoK II, or SK Overnight.
- Registrations: Registrations open the first day of the semester, if the trip is being offered, and close on the Friday before the trip begins.
- Capacity: 12 participants plus Sea Kayaking staff.
- Location: Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in south Georgia.
