North Carolina Lakes

An opportunity to paddle three remote mountain lakes — Lakes Fontana, Cheoah and Calderwood. The lakes are bordered on the north by the Smoky Mountains National Park and on the south by the Nantahala National Forest. Lodging is in a cottage or established campground. Paddling mileage on Fontana is 11. Paddling mileage on Cheoah can be up to 19 (dam to dam), but is usually 13 to 15. Paddling mileage on Calderwood can be up to 15 (dam to dam), but may be 12 to 13. Mileage is dependent on group interests and weather.

Trip Details

• When: Offered during the Fall semester break, beginning about 7:00 am on a Saturday and ending about 8:00 pm on a Monday. There is no Monday evening class.
• Prerequisites: FoK I and FoK II, or SK Overnight.
• Registrations: Registrations open the first day of the semester, if the trip is being offered, and close on the Wednesday before the trip begins.
• Capacity: 12 participants plus Sea Kayaking staff.
